Costa Rica actually regulates tattoo studios
A lot of travelers assume that “abroad” means anything goes. Not here. Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health regulates tattoo and body-piercing studios: to operate legally, a studio must hold a Sanitary Operating Permit (Permiso Sanitario de Funcionamiento) and follow protocols for waste handling and asepsis. Studios are inspected, and staff are expected to be trained in sterile technique and the safe disposal of sharps.
In other words, a legitimate studio in Nosara works inside the same kind of health framework you’d expect at home — not off the grid.
The 6 things to check in any studio, anywhere
You don’t have to take our word for it. This is the checklist any professional artist will happily walk you through. If a studio hesitates on any of these, walk out.
- Single-use needles, opened in front of you. Needles and cartridges come sealed; they’re opened in your presence and never reused between clients.
- Disposable equipment, never reused. In modern tattooing, everything that touches your skin can be single-use and factory-sterilized. Anything reusable must be autoclave-sterilized and sealed in pouches with an indicator.
- Fresh gloves. Your artist gloves up in front of you and changes gloves if they touch anything outside the sterile field.
- A wrapped, clean station. Machines, cords, and surfaces are covered in barrier film that’s thrown away and replaced for every client.
- Single-use ink caps. Ink is poured into disposable caps for you alone — never dipped back into a shared bottle.
- A trained artist. Whoever tattoos you should be trained in asepsis and in the disposal of sharps and infectious waste.
Get those six right and the real risks — infection, cross-contamination, bloodborne illness — drop to essentially zero. Get them wrong and it doesn’t matter what country you’re in.
How we handle hygiene at Nosara Tattoo
We’ve been tattooing in Nosara since 2008, and most of our clients are travelers — so “clean and professional” isn’t a nice-to-have for us, it’s our whole reputation. Here’s what that looks like day to day:
- For tattooing we work 100% single-use: factory-sterilized needles, cartridges, and disposable grips are opened in front of you and never reused between clients.
- We use high-grade professional inks, among the most widely used by studios worldwide, poured into single-use caps for each client.
- We hold a Sanitary Operating Permit and follow the waste-handling and asepsis protocols required by the Ministry of Health.
- Our team is trained in waste handling and asepsis.
- Piercings are done by Mario Ramírez, our certified piercer; reusable instruments are autoclave-sterilized on-site in Nosara, to the same sterile standard.

Only if equipment is reused or unsterile. With single-use equipment, sterile technique, and a clean station, that risk is effectively eliminated. That’s exactly why the checklist above matters.

Should I worry about infection because of the humidity?
The tattoo itself is done in sterile conditions regardless of the weather. Humidity matters during healing, not during the session — which is why good aftercare guidance is part of the service.
